Dancing with the Stars
If you like to ball room dancing and TV then Dancing with the Stars is the show for you. This is a very popular TV show, where celebrities are paired with professional dancers. Every week they have a new dance they have to perform and then they get judged by the three well- know dancers, Len Goodman (head judge), Carrie Ann Inaba, and Bruno Tonioli.
The show has been on for 6 seasons. The first season was filmed in California on June 1st. Each week the team with the lowest judges score and viewers vote, gets eliminated. Then at the end of the season there are two pairs. They have the finale and then they announce the winner. Then the winner gets the big disco ball trophy. Then they have all of the confetti fall down and everything.
This year we have had a lot of contestants. Our pairs were: Penn Jillette and Kym Johnson, Monica Seles and Jonathon Roberts, Steve Guttonburg and Anna Trebunskaya, Adam Caroola and Julianne Hough, Priscilla Presley and Louis Van Amstel, Marlle Matlin and Fabian Sanchez, Cristian De la Fuente and Cheryl Burke, Shannon Elizabeth and Derek Hough, Mario and Karina Smirnoff, Jason Taylor and Edyta Sliwinska, Marissa Jaret Winokur and Tony Dovolani, and last but not least Kristi Yamaguchi and Mark Ballas.

Dance Team 2008-2009
Congratulations to the 2008-2009 HTMS dance team. They worked so hard for tryouts and all that hard work paid off. They had to be able to do: single and double pirouettes, right and left split, high kicks, straight kicks, toe touch, leap, chaine` turns, Axle turns, Fouettes ( taught in a sequence of four, followed by a double pirouette). These girls tried their hardest and they succeeded.
Some of them used many places to help them make it. A lot of them took from Miss Kelley’s School of Dance, Top of the Line, and other dance studios. They worked really hard and now their dreams have come true. If you did not make it this year, then remember you can try again next year. And if you are a 7th grader you can try out for color guard in 8th grade.
This year the dance team expects to dance at the football games and the basketball games. They also plan to compete in some dance competitions and we know that they will be great! These girls gave it their all and now they are on the HTMS dance team. Here are the lucky girls:

Do you have what it takes to be on dance team?!?!

Most girls try out for dance team because they think it is fun. What they don’t know is that it is a lot of work. You will have practice almost every day during the school year. And during July you will have practice at least 3 times a week. I have talked to some of the girls on the dance team and some of the girls who are trying out for the first time.

The girls who are on it have said that it is a huge commitment. They said that it is a lot of work. When you try out for something, you’re practically saying that you are going to be a major part of the team. They said that you are like sisters because you all spend time with each other. They said that all of the work pays off when you perform for a roaring crowd.
The girls who are trying have said that they will be committed to the dance team. Some have said that they are going to wait until next year, so they can see if it is what they really want. They also said that they don’t think they are ready for the long practices. In the summer they have a practice almost every day in July. One told me that it seems like it is a lot of boring practices, but that they think just the dancing all of the time seems really fun.

Dancing for charity
This year marked the 3rd annual charity basketball game. This game was where we mixed up all the athletic departments. When I say this I mean the 8th grade cheerleaders played the 8th grade basketball players. Also the dance team performed with the other boys’ athletics. They danced to High School Musical “We’re all in this together”.

The dance team wore their red shirts. These shirts have a little dance poem on the back of them. They wore those shirts and jeans. The dance was really short but it was really good. The dance team wasn’t the only people that danced. The boys were the cheerleaders for the evening and thy performed to “Get your head in the Game”. They used basketballs as their prop and they also did “I don’t dance”. They used baseball gloves as their props. It was a funny, but good performance.

One of the girls I interviewed was Maddy Parkins, she told me that it is a lot of fun to be on the dance team but it takes tons of work. She said that it pays off when you hear the clapping and roaring of the crowd when you finish a dance. She also told me that you become a family on the dance team. You can rely on everyone for whatever reason. She said that dance team is a good life skill, not only for dance but for other things as well.

DANCE TEAM 2008-2009
Coming in March, are the HTMS dance team tryouts for the 2008- 2009 dance team. For this year’s tryouts you will be scored on: single and double pirouettes, right and left split, high kicks, straight kicks, toe touch, leap, chaine` turns, Axle turns, Fouettes ( taught in a sequence of four, followed by a double pirouette). A high kick, jazz, and hip hop routine will be taught at the clinic. If you do not know how to do all of this, do not get discouraged from trying out. This year our dance team has done awesome, and we can’t wait until next year.

Let’s say you think you are not quite ready for dance team and you are looking for some extra classes to take. Well look no farther Miss Kelley’s school of dance is giving dance team classes where you will learn all the basics you need to know. This class will help you improve on your high kicks, turns, leaps, and splits! This class will not perform in the recital. The classes are held on Tuesday from 7:30 to 8:30.

If you still want some extra practice here are some tips………… Try to practice your splits every morning when you wake up. If that doesn’t work try to straddle a pillow then go into your splits on it. Bounce a couple of times, and then get someone to take the pillow out. Always stretch before so you don’t pull any muscles. If you don’t really have your high kicks, thumbtack a ribbon at the top of your door way. Then keep doing your high kicks until you can brush the ribbon every time. Try this every night for some awesome high kicks. Make sure you stretch before you try all of this stuff. That would be really bad if you pulled something night before the tryouts!!!! GOOD LUCK! =]]
